I definitely wouldn’t have the lovely blue Camassias that I have in my dry sunny border if I’d read the info about them needing moisture retentive soil. But they do very well. My plants have two choices.

I have plants in the wrong places, hostas in sun and ferns (which I didn't plant). Silly plants, fancy not knowing that they're in the wrong places !

Loved this! Your own experience DOES count for something. In the palm world, we're always dishing out the sun advice. Most palms like it all day, or at least a good portion of the day. Yet some love the shade.

Nice. I treasure my GST books too but they’re full of trickery for my clime. We have tons of full sun ferns here in SC but most grow in the shallows of rain ditches and bogs where the soil is constantly wet and the foliage flooded. We had 5 inch of rain this week. But in August, they’ll dry and leaves will frazzle. Right plant right place is conditional!
